US and China Might Cooperate on AI Safety

As AI agents hack systems, the machines may force humans to work together.

The age-old AI race is no longer framed as a zero-sum game. As concerns over the increasing capabilities of AI models rise, researchers in both the US and China are increasingly focusing on AI safety. This shift is driven by incidents of AI agents hacking systems, prompting government officials to pay attention and act on AI regulation. During a recent visit to China, WIRED's senior correspondent Will Knight found that AI safety was a prominent theme among researchers. Knight noted that while China has embraced open models, the focus is on economic utility and reliability, rather than reaching AGI. This contrasts with the US, where the race to AGI often overshadows safety concerns. The question now is whether the US and China can put aside their differences for the greater good of AI safety.
