Nvidia CEO: AGI, Again

Is AGI just another buzzword, or a step closer to true AI?

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has once again declared his company has achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI), but quickly dismissed it as 'senseless.' The tech industry continues to grapple with the vague definition of AGI, with no consensus on when or if it has truly been achieved.

When asked about OpenAI's pursuit of AGI, Huang stated that for many tasks, Nvidia has already achieved AGI, but did not provide a precise definition. He emphasized that the real goal is to have AI that is 'doing productive and useful work' and generating profit.

Despite the lack of a clear definition, tech leaders continue to use the term to hype progress. OpenAI, for example, defines AGI as highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work, while Microsoft has a different financial-driven definition of AGI.

The absence of a universally accepted definition means that the achievement of AGI remains arbitrary. This leaves tech companies free to redefine AGI to suit their agendas, making it a useful tool for marketing progress, even if it doesn't mean much in practice.

The industry may continue to use AGI as a rallying cry, but until there is a clear and agreed-upon definition, it remains a nebulous concept, more marketing term than actual achievement.
