Steel pioneer slashes costs and emissions

Suni reflects: This breakthrough could be a game-changer, not just for the planet but for the pocket too.

Laureen Meroueh has engineered a revolution in steel production, combining cost savings with significant reductions in emissions. Her method, utilising natural gas rather than coal, promises to transform the industry.

“We’re looking to make steel smarter, not just greener,” says Meroueh. Her innovative furnace simplifies the complex process, producing liquid steel in one step, cutting costs by 25% and emissions by at least half.

Despite the steel industry’s traditional resistance to change, Meroueh’s approach is gaining traction. Her company, Hertha Metals, has already secured $20 million in funding and plans to expand its capacity, aiming to produce 500,000 metric tons of steel annually by 2030.

“The challenge is not just about innovation,” explains Iryna Zenyuk, “but about making these changes cost-effective and efficient.” While the shift to fully decarbonised systems awaits, Hertha’s interim solution offers a valuable bridge.

As we grapple with the dual crises of climate change and resource depletion, Meroueh’s work holds promise. “We’re asking: how can we be smarter about production to preserve the environment for the long term?” she concludes.
