Bluecore Energy, a startup that builds small nuclear reactors (SMRs) on floating barges, has announced an oversubscribed $50 million seed round, just months after raising a $10 million pre-seed. Founded by Kofi Asante, the company aims to bring clean energy to ports and nearby infrastructure, with the potential to supply multiple ports, AI data centers and communities in need of clean energy and water.
Asante believes in the safety of portable nuclear technology, citing the Navy’s 70-year track record without accidents. With support from investors like Collab Capital and Kevin Hart’s HartBeat Ventures, Bluecore Energy is now undergoing review with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the U.S. Coast Guard to certify its floating nuclear power plant. The fresh capital will fund continued product development, regulatory work, nuclear fuel purchases, and hiring.
The company’s core mission is to democratize access to clean energy. Asante, a SpaceX veteran, hopes that the technology can be applied to critical parts supply, ensuring that the infrastructure can match consumer demand. Bluecore Energy has seen inbound interest from multiple ports and communities.
The company has launched two floating barges and struck a partnership with the Department of Transportation Maritime Division, the U.S. NRC, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Asante anticipates that the biggest challenge will be the supply chain, securing hardware to build the right portable infrastructure at a pace that can match consumer demand.
