A major U.K. energy firm, Zephyr Energy, reported a £700,000 theft after hackers redirected a payment intended for a contractor into their own account. The company is now working with banks and consultants to recover the funds.
The incident highlights how vulnerable even large corporations are to business email compromise attacks, where cybercriminals manipulate bank details through compromised inboxes or accounting systems. Such attacks reportedly cost victims over $3 billion globally last year.
Zephyr stated that it uses industry-standard practices and has bolstered its security measures post-incident. However, the question remains: can we ever fully trust digital transactions?
The company did not provide further details on how the hack occurred or why a spokesperson declined to comment. For now, the funds are listed as 'contained,' but the incident underscores the ongoing threat of cybercrime in financial sectors.
