Beehiiv, the popular creator platform, has raised its prices, causing consternation among its user-base. In a move that could be seen as a double-edged sword, the platform has increased its Lite plan to $139 per month from $109, and its Pro plan to $239 from $219. For those with fewer than 2,500 subscribers, the platform remains free.
Creators like freelance journalist Tim Stevens and NFL news site Between the Hashmarks founder Matt Lombardo have expressed frustration. Stevens noted that 'the sponsor choices and ad rates have tanked,' while Lombardo found it 'frustrating' that Beehiiv is raising prices without adding new features.
Despite the price hikes, Beehiiv founder and CEO Tyler Denk claims the changes will enable the company to invest in core platform improvements. Denk states, 'This is only the second time weβve ever updated our plans and pricing in Beehiivβs near five-year history.' He adds, 'Over the past several years, we have greatly expanded the capabilities of the platform.'
For many creators, the decision to switch to Beehiiv was to avoid the 10% cut Substack takes from subscription revenue. However, as prices rise, the allure of Beehiiv is diminishing. On Reddit, creator Matt Brown suggests that for those with under 10,000 subscribers, it might be more cost-effective to find alternative platforms with lower startup costs and affiliate ad networks.
