Bluesky, the decentralized social network, is set to introduce payments within the next few months, aiming to diversify its revenue model beyond advertising.
CEO Toni Schneider and COO Rose Wang revealed these plans during a TechCrunch Disrupt event, highlighting that current users are already engaging in commerce and fundraising on the network. The duo emphasized making these activities more accessible and sustainable for all applications on the network.
Speaking of his appointment, Schneider noted the mixed reactions from users and the fear that changes in leadership might alter the platform's direction. However, he reassures that the introduction of features users dislike will make the leadership team more accountable.
Wang stressed that Bluesky’s business model is not solely based on advertising, citing the success of WordPress Automatic as a precedent. She also highlighted the company’s status as a Public Benefit Corporation, emphasizing that the network’s value should flow directly to its creators.
Bluesky’s ultimate goal is to empower users with ownership of their digital identities, fostering a more open internet where value and revenue are distributed equitably.
