A staggering $963,000 worth of graded Pokémon and sports cards were snatched from a FedEx truck outside the headquarters of PSA, one of the world's largest card grading companies, in Santa Ana, California. The theft was reported last week and has left 200 packages of valuable collectibles missing.
PSA, now under the umbrella of Collectors Holdings, has been working closely with local law enforcement and FedEx to investigate the theft. The company has taken steps to deactivate the unique certification numbers of the stolen cards to prevent resale and has been offering compensation based on the fair market value, with a maximum insured value per item.
One of the victims, Sky-B Cards, paid $8,468 to have 104 collectible sports cards graded, many of which are now lost. The response from PSA was a form letter, revealing the impersonal nature of the card grading industry in the face of such a high-profile theft.
Other collectors have banded together, using YouTube to compile a list of stolen cards, hoping to identify them and prevent them from re-entering the market. The incident highlights the vulnerability of high-value collectibles and the need for better security measures in the shipping and handling of such items.
