Amazon has agreed to buy satellite firm Globalstar for $11.57 billion, bolstering its burgeoning satellite business, Amazon Leo.
The move comes just days after CEO Andy Jassy revealed a roster of high-profile customers including Delta Airlines and NASA, showcasing new satellite internet antennas designed for commercial jets.
In comparison to the much larger Starlink, which currently operates over 10,000 satellites, Amazon’s launch is still in its early stages. However, with more than 24 active satellites and agreements for over 50 new ones, Globalstar has a promising future.
The acquisition will allow Amazon to integrate direct-to-device services into its satellite internet offerings, launching in 2028. Meanwhile, Apple users can rest assured; the deal includes continued satellite connectivity services for iPhones and Watches.
