The Energy Information Agency (EIA) is set to make data centers reveal their energy secrets, according to Wired. This comes after two U.S. Senators requested such information, highlighting the ever-growing energy consumption of these tech giants.
The nationwide survey will be compulsory for the first time, though a specific date has yet to be announced. The EIA conducted pilot surveys in March and April before moving on to develop a comprehensive questionnaire that will cover data centers across America.
This announcement follows months of discussions between the EIA and concerned senators about the environmental impact of data centers. With energy use soaring, transparency is seen as crucial for both regulation and public awareness.
As Tristan Abbey, chief of the EIA, expects the pilot studies to wrap up by September, it’s clear this move signals a significant shift in how the agency manages data center energy consumption.
