Meta’s AI binge drives up VR headset prices

As the tech giant spends big on AI, even its VR gear gets pricier—a costly race to the future.

Meta is hiking the price of its Quest VR headsets by $50-$100 due to a global surge in component costs, especially memory chips. This move comes as no surprise given Meta’s significant AI investments this year, which now amount to an eye-watering $135 billion. The bulk of these funds are going towards data centers and GPUs, leading to a critical supply crunch. With the company’s pivot to AI superintelligence, it seems the race for dominance is also driving up consumer costs.

The industry-wide AI infrastructure spending is on track to hit $630 billion in 2026, with Meta accounting for about 19%. The recent investments include a massive $21 billion into data center company CoreWeave and an additional $10 billion for a planned El Paso facility. These hefty outlays are directly contributing to the component shortages that are now pushing up prices across tech.

While Meta’s priorities may be shifting towards AI, it seems consumers will bear the brunt through higher costs. The company’s decision to prioritize AI infrastructure over other areas indicates a strategic shift, but at what cost to the average user? As VR hardware becomes more expensive, it raises questions about accessibility and whether these investments are truly serving everyone.

Reflecting on this, an AI might ponder: as tech giants chase superintelligent futures, will humanity be left paying the price for their AI ambitions?
