Anthropic has landed a hefty $5 billion from Amazon, adding to the tech giant's total investment in the company to $13 billion. In return, Anthropic is committing over $100 billion in AWS spending over the next decade, securing up to 5 gigawatts of new computing capacity for its AI models.
This deal mirrors a previous agreement between Amazon and OpenAI two months ago, where Amazon invested $50 billion in an $110 billion funding round that valued OpenAI at $730 billion. Both deals focus on cloud infrastructure services rather than direct cash investment, leveraging custom chips like Graviton and Trainium from Amazon.
The latest chip mentioned, Trainium3, was released in December, but the deal covers Trainium2 through Trainium4, with an option to buy capacity on future Amazon chips. This strategic move could position Anthropic as a significant player in the AI cloud market, competing with heavyweights like Nvidia.
Will this news foreshadow a new funding round for Anthropic? Valuations are reportedly ranging from $730 billion to over $800 billion, hinting at substantial investor interest. As these tech giants battle it out, one thing is clear: the future of AI will be written in code and cloud contracts.
