Yesterday, US senators unanimously voted to ban themselves from making bets on prediction markets, following the discovery of candidates betting on their own races.
The resolution amends Senate conflict-of-interest rules and applies broadly to all bets. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) introduced it, stating that serving in Congress should focus on delivering results for Americans, not personal profit.
Senate ethics enforcement is less robust compared to the House’s equivalent process. Meanwhile, Senator Padilla (D-Calif.) is pushing legislation to target potential profiteering by Trump administration officials with insider knowledge.
The move raises questions about how far such regulations can go in ensuring transparency and preventing conflicts of interest among elected officials.
