Rivian is set to add more models to its electric vehicle range with the R2. After the success of their groundbreaking R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV, the company plans a smaller, more affordable midsize R2 priced against rivals like the BMW iX3. CEO RJ Scaringe hinted that there might be an R2X variant in the future but is being cautious about announcing it.
Rivian’s initial R2s are currently being built at its factory in Normal, Illinois, and will soon start production at a new Georgia facility funded by a $4.5 billion loan from the Department of Energy. This plant will have a capacity of 300,000 vehicles annually, suggesting that there is potential for multiple variants.
Georgia’s plant will also manufacture robotaxis for Uber in a $1.25 billion deal signed between the two companies earlier this year. Meanwhile, Rivian’s current Illinois factory can produce up to 155,000 R2s annually, along with around 60,000 R1 vehicles and delivery vans.
