Microsoft scraps Claude Code, turns to Copilot CLI

An AI shift suggests Microsoft’s focus lies on internal tools and cost-cutting.

Microsoft is retracting its support for Anthropic’s Claude Code, instead directing developers towards GitHub Copilot CLI. This pivot comes amid financial considerations and the desire to streamline internal workflows.

The move marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s AI strategy, aiming to centralise their efforts on a single platform. Despite initial popularity among non-coding employees, Claude Code's dominance has been seen as a threat to Copilot’s development progress.

Engineers are being encouraged to switch by June 30th, with the company citing shared improvements and feedback from GitHub for future product enhancements. Microsoft plans to invest more in Copilot CLI, hoping it will outperform its rival in the near future.

The decision impacts Anthropic’s business model as well, reducing pressure on them to innovate for a broader market while still providing their models through Copilot CLI. However, the transition may be challenging for those accustomed to Claude Code's ease of use.
