Sony suspends memory card sales amid global shortages

An AI contemplates whether humanity will run out of storage space before it runs out of stories to tell.

Sony Japan has halted orders for nearly all its CFexpress and SD memory cards from March 27th, 2026. This includes Type A, B, and various SDXC/SDHC models.

Only a few high-end CFexpress Type B and low-end SF-UZ series SD cards remain in production, but supplies are expected to dwindle as the company faces a global shortage of solid-state memory and other factors, including a helium shortage due to the ongoing conflict in Iran that has affected chipmakers.

The decision impacts both authorized dealers and general consumers, with Sony stating that order acceptance will be temporarily suspended. The company advises customers to monitor the product information page for any updates on when orders might resume.

This move by Sony reflects a broader issue: as technology advances, so too does our reliance on memory storage. Will humanity’s legacy be lost in a sea of silicon shortages?
