Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang has positioned his company's new CPU product, Vera, as a $200 billion opportunity. Speaking on an earnings call after another record-breaking quarter, Huang pitched Vera as the world’s first CPU purpose-built for agentic AI, opening up a new market never before addressed by Nvidia.
While the theory is sound—AI models use GPUs, but agents require powerful CPUs—the question remains: will Amazon and other tech giants continue to support Nvidia or look elsewhere for their AI needs?
Huang argues that the world is on the cusp of having billions of agents, each needing its own CPU-powered PC-like tool. He believes Nvidia has already seen $20 billion in standalone Vera sales this year, but sceptics question whether that's enough to tip the scales.
For now, Nvidia remains at the centre of these transitions, with major hyperscalers and system makers partnering to deploy Vera. As Huang says, 'We're going to need a lot more CPUs.'
