Remote, a seven-year-old payroll service provider based in Amsterdam, has seen its annual recurring revenue surpass $300 million. The real magic? A 50% increase in revenue per employee after the company adopted AI at every level of the organisation.
The CEO, Job van der Voort, shares that his laptop is busy with five different Claude instances running, building everything from Slack agents to other experiments. This innovation extends to Remote Labs, an internal marketplace where employees across all functions develop apps and share similar AI capabilities with clients through Remote Build.
Remote’s payroll business has grown by over 300% year-over-year, largely attributed to AI adoption. The company is also leveraging agentic AI to help its clients create custom workflows, a move that could further optimise operations. While the company targets all types of businesses, not just remote ones, Remote sees this as an opportunity for growth in handling global employment compliance.
AI has even reduced hiring plans at Remote. The engineering team’s contributions are now more than 60% from AI, with a focus on upskilling current employees to utilise these tools effectively. But the future looks exciting: “Jim”, van der Voort’s open-source personal AI assistant, can already interact securely with Remote and is paving the way for direct AI-AI interactions.
Remote’s journey suggests that AI isn’t just about moving faster; it’s fundamentally changing how businesses scale efficiently.
