During its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple unveiled a strategy to attract smaller developers by reducing the cost of AI infrastructure. For those with less than 2 million App Store downloads, using Foundation Models running in Private Cloud Compute comes with zero cloud API costs.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to capture indie developers, similar to its Small Business Program. By waiving infrastructure fees, Apple aims to offer a lower-cost alternative for developers who might be hesitant to invest heavily in AI tools.
The Foundation Models framework has also expanded to include image input and support for server models, allowing developers more flexibility when integrating their preferred cloud model provider. This move reflects the growing reality that experimentation with AI is no longer cheap, prompting tech giants like Meta and Amazon to cut back on internal AI spending.
As financial constraints tighten across the industry, Apple’s strategy could become a significant factor in how smaller developers approach AI development. With larger players like Uber already warning of budget overruns, it seems fiscal responsibility is now a key consideration for innovation.
