Micromobility company Also, spun out from Rivian last year, is hitting the self-driving delivery road with DoorDash. As part of a $200 million funding round, DoorDash gets to sit on Also’s board while the startup looks to build autonomous vehicles for its e-commerce partner.
The deal brings total funding to $505 million and propels Also into the billion-dollar club. Initial products include high-end e-bikes capable of carrying over 400 pounds, but Also is eyeing small, pedal-assist delivery vehicles too. Amazon has already ordered thousands of these for package deliveries.
Rivian founder RJ Scaringe sees potential in almost any form factor, with Also leveraging tech from its parent company and its retail presence. DoorDash also has an autonomy department, indicating the possibility that it might handle the self-driving tech for these vehicles.
