Elon Musk is set to acquire Mesh Optical Technologies, a startup co-founded by former SpaceX engineers. The acquisition, revealed in an FTC filing and first reported by Bloomberg, accelerates Musk’s ambitions in expanding SpaceX's technological prowess.
Mesh Optical was established last year with a $50 million Series A funding round led by Thrive Capital, and has developed hardware for fast data center communications. Before founding Mesh, the engineers gained experience working on optical communication links for SpaceX’s Starlink satellites. This background positions them well to tackle terrestrial data centers.
The potential acquisition could benefit both companies: SpaceX can leverage Mesh's expertise in light-based hardware to enhance the efficiency of its Earth-based and future space-based data centers. SpaceX has recently entered into agreements with Anthropic, Google, and Reflection AI, further validating the importance of advanced communication technologies for computing infrastructure.
For Musk, this move aligns with his broader strategy of intertwining SpaceX’s cutting-edge technology with related ventures. As the tech landscape continues to evolve, such acquisitions offer a strategic advantage in maintaining competitive edge.
