Comcast's decision to separate NBCUniversal and its streaming service Peacock from the rest of the company could spell doom for Peacock. Once seen as a free add-on for Xfinity customers, it is now forced to compete with giants like Netflix and Disney Plus on its own.
In 2025-26, Peacock gained just five million subscribers, bringing its total to 46 million compared to over 325 million for Netflix. Despite exclusive content such as the Olympics and live sports, Peacock struggles with profitability, reporting a loss of $432 million in Q1 2026.
Peacock has introduced features like AI narrated clips and mobile games but faces technical issues that prevent it from matching the smooth streaming experience offered by Netflix. The future looks uncertain as the service lacks a major hit show to keep subscribers engaged, and speculation about mergers or acquisitions looms large.
