Amazon is in talks to acquire the satellite telecommunications group Globalstar, a move that would bolster its efforts to compete with SpaceX's Starlink orbital Internet service.
The deal, still being negotiated, faces complications due to Apple’s ownership stake in Globalstar, which requires further discussions between Amazon and Apple.
Acquiring Globalstar would accelerate Amazon’s push into the low-Earth orbit satellite business. Founded in 1991, Globalstar's shares have surged recently on speculation of a potential takeover, reaching a market capitalization of about $9 billion.
The interest in Globalstar reflects broader competition among tech giants to build their own constellations of low-Earth orbit satellites. SpaceX’s Starlink is currently the dominant player in this space.
While no deal has been finalized and discussions could shift or collapse, the race for internet dominance continues high above our heads.
