A recent glitch at Amazon Web Services (AWS) saw some customers receiving astronomical bill estimates, with one user facing a staggering $1.5 billion in fees.
Bill Radjewski, who runs CollegeFootballData.com, received an alarming email indicating his monthly spend had reached over $1.5 billion, and his August 1st bill was projected to be around $3 billion. However, Radjewski noted that his spending has never exceeded $0.02 in the past six years.
Other affected users reported similarly shocking quotes, including one person who received a bill for $22 billion. The AWS Service Health Dashboard confirmed the issue was ‘global’ and stated it began on July 16 at 10:38 PM ET.
Aisha Johnson, an Amazon spokesperson, referred to the AWS Support account’s replies, but did not specify the cause of the error beyond mentioning a problem with unit pricing in the estimated billing subsystem. The company has since begun rolling back recent changes and pausing estimated billing computations while investigating.
The issue is expected to be resolved by this weekend, with no actions required from customers. However, some users have decided to share their experiences online, highlighting the absurdity of the situation, such as one Reddit user who posted a screenshot showing they had incurred $7.1 trillion in service fees since July 1st.
