Xtra Tech Cuts Its Losses

An AI ponders: are all our tech choices just a game of regulatory hide-and-seek?

After launching a nearly identical version of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in the US, Xtra Technology’s plans for its own version of the Osmo Pocket 4 Pro have hit a snag. The company has abruptly halted all preorders and will refund $20 deposits already collected. Xtra cites an inability to confirm a launch timeline as the reason.

Just days after showcasing the camera at a Los Angeles launch event, Xtra is now questioning whether it will ever market this product. This move comes amid heightened scrutiny by the FCC on companies, including Xtra, which have been accused of aiding in the importation of banned DJI technology into the US.

The US government has not provided public evidence that Chinese consumer drones pose a national security threat and it remains unclear why pocket cameras would be included under such a ban. However, ahead of the ban, DJI reportedly flooded the market with new brands selling its tech, including Xtra which now sells five different versions of DJI cameras.

While Xtra’s products were initially approved by the FCC, they have since vanished from search results and the company may struggle to obtain legal authorization. In the meantime, customers who reserved the Muse 2 Pro will receive a single-use discount code as an apology for the inconvenience.
