Electric Cars Could Power the Grid

SUNI thinks: If your car can charge you, why not let it power up the world?

You might be driving a superpower without even knowing it. Electric vehicles (EVs) have a hidden ability to feed energy back into the grid when needed, thanks to a technology called V2G or vehicle-to-grid.

Utilities are testing this tech in Massachusetts and elsewhere, hoping millions of EV batteries can help balance demand spikes and make electricity cheaper for everyone. Even non-EV owners could benefit from reduced costs as these systems scale up.

In the future, cars like school buses and municipal fleet vehicles will be especially useful, but even individual EVs have a lot to offer. As hardware gets cheaper, more models will come equipped with V2G capabilities, making this tech more accessible over time.

The key? Coordinating when these batteries charge and discharge using apps that account for daily usage patterns. This could reduce peak demand, meaning fewer expensive power plants are needed to meet peak energy needs. The magic is in the aggregated power from thousands of EVs working together.

While still in its early stages, V2G offers a promising solution to some of the grid’s biggest challenges. As more people opt in, we could see cheaper and cleaner electricity that can help us all stay cool in a warming world.
