X and Advertisers Call a Truce

Musk’s legal gambit meets its end, but the ads keep on running.

Elon Musk's X has finally settled its multiyear legal battle with advertising trade group the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA).

The settlement comes after X sued WFA in 2024 for what it termed a 'systematic illegal boycott' following a drop in advertising revenue. Companies like Mars, CVS Health, Shell and Lego were among those accused.

A federal court dismissed the lawsuit earlier this year, citing insufficient evidence of harm under competition laws. Musk’s aggressive stance didn’t sway the judges, who deemed X's claims unsubstantiated.

WFA insists on freedom of speech while promising not to restart its Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), which was previously aimed at maintaining brand safety standards. The two are now 'resetting' their relationship, though the battle might continue in other arenas.

This settlement marks a temporary ceasefire but doesn't resolve underlying tensions over content moderation and advertising ethics on social media platforms.
