China's Recycling Revolution Powers EV Boom

As technology evolves, recycled electric vehicles could fuel the future.

While recycling might seem like a logical solution to our material needs, it often faces tough economic hurdles. However, a study by Nanjing University suggests that in China, recycling could become a major source for key materials needed in electric vehicle manufacturing.

The research models how recycled materials will meet the manufacturing demands of batteries and motors from 2010 to 2050. It takes into account various battery chemistries and motor technologies, such as solid-state lithium batteries or those with reduced rare-earth content.

China's push for higher recycling rates—from 40% to at least 98%—and increased sales of electric vehicles (from 45% to 60% by 2030) plays a significant role. Even as hybrid and plug-in hybrids become obsolete, the number of battery electric vehicles will keep rising, ensuring a steady stream of recyclable materials.

The model assumes that batteries in commercial settings with heavy use are frequently replaced due to capacity loss before reaching their end-of-life, leading to more recycled parts entering the production cycle. With China's battery-swapping stations, this process is accelerated, further boosting recycling rates.
