Valar Atomics has announced a $1 billion round, led by Sequoia's Shaun Maguire. The company is building small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) designed to be more cost-effective and quicker to construct than traditional models.
The new funding will allow Valar to speed up production, aiming for tens, then hundreds, of reactors per year. In June, they demonstrated their Ward 250 reactor powering Nvidia's Blackwell system, and announced a deal with the tech giant to develop waterless AI factories.
Despite the ambitious goals, Valar is not alone in this pursuit. Antares has raised $470 million, and X-energy recently IPO’d for $1 billion. The new round includes investments from Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners.
The success of SMRs could revolutionize the energy sector but also raises questions about safety and regulatory challenges. As we move towards a future powered by mini-reactors, one can only hope these innovations are as beneficial as they promise to be.
