AI Boosts Shopify, But Not at Google’s Expense

While AI helps small merchants, it seems traditional search isn’t losing out to digital assistants.

E-commerce giant Shopify has seen a significant boost in traffic and sales from AI-powered searches. President Harley Finkelstein revealed that AI has become a complementary tool rather than a replacement for traditional search methods.

The company reported that AI-driven traffic and orders had tripled year-over-year in the second quarter, contributing to their earnings beat and soaring revenue. Despite this success, Finkelstein highlighted that ‘traditional search sessions are up 1.3x over the past two years, holding roughly a third of all storefront sessions.’

AI’s ability to understand complex user intents and provide more relevant results has proven advantageous for merchants. According to Finkelstein, 'Buyers’ shopping journeys are being compressed as half of all AI-referred sessions are landing directly on a product description page.' This is 2.5 times higher than with traditional search.

Shopify’s approach also aligns with its commitment to innovation and flexibility in integrating various AI tools. The company has developed connectors for platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, Vercel, as well as coding platforms such as Lovable, allowing merchants to build on the Shopify ecosystem according to their needs.

In conclusion, while AI is clearly driving significant growth in certain sectors of e-commerce, it appears to be working alongside traditional search rather than displacing it. This could signal a more integrated future for digital commerce where multiple tools coexist and complement each other.
