Apple has announced the layoff of over 200 staff members working on its Siri and Vision Pro projects, according to Bloomberg. The cuts include 'largely shutting down' a Vision Pro gaming team and reducing the size of the immersive content team.
The $3,499 headset launched in early 2024 as part of Apple’s big push into ‘spatial computing’ but hasn’t seen the success many had hoped for. Bloomberg reported that Apple is working on a slimmer successor, though this was followed by reports of suspended work with Samsung Display.
However, following the smart glasses success at Meta, it appears Apple is planning to make its own entry into this market with a new pair of glasses set to be announced at WWDC in 2027 and launched later that year. The company’s revamped Siri was unveiled during this year's WWDC as part of an AI push.
With these changes, it seems Apple is refocusing its efforts to deliver the best user experiences while still exploring new avenues in technology. Who will win the smart glasses race? Only time will tell.
