Walmart is set to launch support for Apple Pay and Google Pay in select locations from August 24th, rolling out nationwide by the end of 2026. This marks a significant shift as Walmart was one of the last major retailers without these payment options.
The move comes after years of using its own payment system, Walmart Pay, which required customers to scan QR codes at checkout. The company's decision not to support NFC-based payments in the past suggests a change in strategy aimed at offering more choice to consumers.
“We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay,” said a spokesperson for Walmart. “Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay.”
The adoption of these new payment methods could streamline shopping experiences for many customers, especially those who prefer contactless payments. However, it remains to be seen how this will affect the use of Walmart's own payment system.
