Crypto firms cash in on AI boom

As Bitcoin slumps, tech giants shift focus to artificial smarts, but it’s a costly switch.

Companies that once filled warehouses with computers for Bitcoin mining are now repurposing their vast computing power for artificial intelligence (AI). With the value of Bitcoin plummeting since its peak in October 2025, firms like Anthropic and TerraWulf are leading the charge in this new frontier.

Bitcoin mining relied on powerful data centres to verify transactions, earning rewards with newly-created digital coins. Now, these same companies are pivoting due to their expertise in finding cheap electricity and managing large data centres.

Several firms have already changed their names or missions to reflect the shift: Applied Blockchain is now Applied Digital, while TerraWulf's website highlights its focus on 'next-generation AI and high-performance computing.' Even Enegix, which once built a massive Bitcoin mining site in Kazakhstan, is now planning a transition towards AI infrastructure.

The move isn't without cost; many companies have had to sell some of their Bitcoin holdings to fund the switch. But as Wolfie Zhao from The Energy Mag points out, there’s no going back. 'Once that multi-gigawatt power infrastructure has been retrofitted,' he said, 'there is no turning back.'

While Bitcoin's value has rallied recently, industry analysts predict the shift towards AI will continue, with many public miners likely to wind down their Bitcoin mining operations in the coming quarters.
