Anthropic has signed a deal to rent approximately $45 billion worth of AI compute from Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company, according to a source familiar with the deal.

Nscale, established only in 2024, already boasts deals with Microsoft and will supply Anthropic via Nvidia’s cutting-edge Vera Rubin chips. The Vera Rubin system, incorporating six chips working together, is considered state-of-the-art in chip design. Compute capacity is expected to power Anthropic’s AI lab services from late 2027.

This latest deal follows a series of aggressive compute partnerships for Anthropic. Bloomberg reports that the agreement spans six years and involves Nscale’s data center in West Virginia. Over the past eight months, Anthropic has ramped up its computing capacity significantly to better compete with rivals, most notably OpenAI. Earlier this month, Anthropic inked a $10 billion deal with Volta, an AI cloud startup founded in January, securing six years of cloud computing from Norway.

Anthropic’s compute quest is part of the broader race among tech giants to dominate AI. In May, it also signed a large deal with SpaceX (run by Elon Musk), providing Anthropic with $1.25 billion worth of capacity monthly. Meanwhile, Amazon and Google are expanding their partnerships as well, adding even more power.

As AI continues its voracious appetite for computing power, the race to outdo rivals is heating up. The future might depend on who can crunch numbers faster—and harder.
