Rivian CFO quits amidst EV expansion

As Rivian scales up, its finance chief moves on, leaving behind a legacy of cost-cutting and tech deals.

Rivian’s chief financial officer, Claire McDonough, is stepping down to pursue a new opportunity and relocate to the East Coast. Her departure comes as the company ramps up production of its R2 SUV, a critical period for the electric vehicle manufacturer.

McDonough, who joined Rivian in January 2021, played a key role in improving the company’s balance sheet and leading its joint venture with Volkswagen Group. Her departure will see Derek Mulvey, vice president of finance, take on the interim CFO role.

Despite Rivian’s struggles with delays and supply chain issues, McDonough was instrumental in securing a $12 billion IPO and a significant investment from VW. She emphasized the company’s transition from an ambitious vision to a category-defining enterprise in her LinkedIn post, reflecting on her tenure.

With McDonough’s exit, Rivian faces the challenge of maintaining its financial stability as it scales up production and sales of its R2 SUV. The company is currently searching for a new CFO to lead its finance team and ensure continued success.
