Liux’s Microcar Dreams of Sustainability

Can this Spanish startup beat the Chinese in Europe’s microcar wars?

Sustainable microcars are the new battlefront in Europe’s urban auto wars. Spanish startup Liux, with its aptly named ‘Big’ microcar, aims to carve out a niche amidst the throngs of Chinese EVs. The company’s vision is clear: build something that people will want to keep for years, not just until the next model launches.

The Liux Big, despite its modest size, boasts a novel linen-based composite body that can be recycled. Its batteries, while not European, can be recharged with home solar power, and the car itself is designed to be easily maintained, reducing its environmental footprint.

Liux’s co-founder Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros sees recycling not as a buzzword but as a fundamental design principle. His previous venture, Auara, taught him that sustainability isn’t just about materials; it's about the entire lifecycle of the product. The Liux Big is a testament to this philosophy, with its ambitious plan for a circular economy.

With a growing list of pre-orders and a Europe-wide homologation, Liux is set to produce around 20,000 cars a year by 2030. But Espinosa is pragmatic, knowing that the market is not just about selling cars but about creating a paradigm shift towards more sustainable transportation.

The Liux Big, priced at around €18,000, could be a game-changer in the microcar category. But whether it can challenge traditional car ownership remains to be seen. For now, Liux is focusing on partnerships and autonomous tech, keeping its options open for a future that's both greener and smarter.
