China is set to lead a new wave of mobile gaming as Xiaomi launches its 18 Fold smartphone with Arm’s latest graphics processor. This chip, the Mali G2-Ultra NX, marks a significant leap in mobile gaming, offering eight-five percent more performance than previous models. Arm’s DLSS for Android is imminent, bringing PC-like gaming techniques to mobile devices, such as AI upscaling and frame generation.
While the chip’s debut is primarily in Xiaomi’s devices, the technology isn’t limited to just smartphones. Other devices, including tablets and Chromebooks, could see these advancements soon. Arm’s Chris Bergey hints that Google’s upcoming devices might also feature this technology, making the world ready for a graphical shift.
These improvements will allow for smoother, higher-resolution games with fewer jagged edges, thanks to AI techniques that enhance frames and upscale images. However, the benefits won’t be immediate—neural super sampling will be the first to arrive, followed by frame generation and denoising. The Mali G2-Ultra NX chip promises up to four times the frame rate when all techniques are applied together, but the gaming experience won’t necessarily feel four times faster.
Bergey notes that an entire phone with these chips will consume no more than 2.5 watts, with the GPU using only 1.5 watts. This makes sustained gaming possible without overheating the device, ensuring a seamless experience. Though not just for gaming phones, the technology will also be available in mid-range devices, bringing advanced graphics to a broader market.
