On Tuesday, Sony will release Marvel's Wolverine, an exclusive PlayStation 5 title with a PEGI-18 rating, making it unsuitable for children. Despite the potential alienation of younger audiences, the game's brutal combat and engaging storyline could still secure a loyal fanbase.
Freelance game critic Emma Kent notes that Insomniac is moving away from the open-world formula that made Spider-Man a hit, opting for a more linear structure. This shift, combined with the game's graphic violence, represents a significant gamble for Sony.
Mike Daly, the game's director, acknowledged the risk but insisted that it was necessary to tell the story of Wolverine in the correct context. The performances, particularly those of Troy Baker as Nathaniel Essex and Liam McIntyre as Wolverine himself, are praised for their quality and emotional depth.
However, some players may miss the gameplay intensity and may find the frequent cutscenes intrusive. The game’s reliance on these sequences, while bolstered by top-notch acting, could detract from the overall experience.
