Nintendo's Super Mario Get a Lift

Is the plumber about to jump into the 3D abyss, or is it just a shiny new look?

Nintendo has quietly refreshed the Super Mario Bros logo, giving the classic design a 3D polish. The iconic multicolour wordmark retains its recognisability, but now sports a metallic grey bevel and a glossy, toy-like finish. While many fans are speculating that this could herald a new 3D Mario game, the change might just be a return to more textured design aesthetics.

The last significant update to the logo was in 2011, coinciding with the release of Super Mario 3D Land. This time, the update keeps the familiar elements but adds a 3D polish, reminiscent of the 3D logo designs from Mario 64 and Super Mario 3D World.

The decision to reintroduce a 3D look could be a strategic move to stand out in the crowded console market, where physical game releases are becoming more relevant. Mario's 3D makeover should look great on physical media, which Nintendo is trying to differentiate itself with.

While the redesign is intriguing, it might just be a refreshing move rather than a sign of a new game. Fans wait with bated breath for the next Nintendo Direct, hoping the plumber will jump into the 3D abyss.
