ESA aims to curb Anbernic’s ‘superfake’ gaming devices
Anbernic’s emulated handhelds are seen as facilitating piracy, a move that could bring stricter enforcement measures.
For years, Chinese hardware manufacturers like Anbernic have dominated the retro gaming market with devices that offer classic games and modern streaming capabilities. Now, a coalition of major game publishers, including Nintendo and Sony, are targeting Anbernic, urging the USTR to label the company as a 'Notorious Market' for enabling copyright piracy. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), Anbernic devices often ship with preloaded ROMs, which the ESA claims 'normalise' piracy by providing a polished consumer product. While Anbernic does not offer these ROMs directly on its website, the USTR’s inclusion could lead to stricter enforcement measures. This move highlights the ongoing struggle between tech companies and piracy, with the ESA arguing that these devices 'normalize' hardware-based piracy through a 'superfake' designation, a term that applies to high-quality counterfeit goods sold commercially.
