Metro 2039’s Future Shaped by Ukraine’s Struggle

As war rages, developers rewrite choices and consequences in their post-apocalyptic games.

It's been seven years since Metro Exodus wowed players with its chilling post-apocalyptic setting. Now, the next chapter of the series, Metro 2039, is being reshaped by the brutal realities of Ukraine’s war.

The developers at 4A Studios, based in Malta but founded in Kyiv and now working across 25 countries, have had to adapt their plans. The team, with a majority of Ukrainian members, has faced significant disruptions due to ongoing Russian invasion.

Focus on work amid constant drone attacks means relying on generators or batteries, yet the developers remain committed, believing that fighting for your ideas is crucial. Support from families remains paramount, helping them concentrate during these challenging times. The team’s upbringing in Ukraine taught them not to take anything for granted and that achievements are something one must fight for.

While Metro 2039 remains set in the Metro universe established by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the reality of the war has given it a uniquely Ukrainian perspective. Previous games focused on preventing conflict; now, they’re about facing and living through its consequences.

The developers emphasize that the worst aspects of humanity will be on display, reflecting both the struggles and the resilience inherent in their story.
