The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is turning to video game enthusiasts to fill a critical shortage of air traffic controllers. With an estimated shortfall of over 3,000 workers and salaries reaching £115,000 after three years, the level up campaign aims to attract gamers who possess the quick decision-making skills essential for the role.
Addressing safety concerns following multiple high-profile incidents, US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy highlights the need to adapt and reach young adults adept at gaming. The campaign is reminiscent of previous efforts under the Biden administration, suggesting that while the approach may change, the goal remains constant: to attract a new generation of controllers.
Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, supports innovative approaches but stresses the importance of maintaining high standards for the safety-critical profession. The recruitment strategy is part of an ongoing effort to ensure air travel remains as safe and efficient as possible.
