Sony is implementing age verification for PlayStation users in the UK and Ireland, set to take effect on June 2026. Players who fail to verify their age will lose access to social features like voice chats and messaging.
Users can verify using a mobile number, face scan or ID through Yoti's services. This move is similar to Microsoft’s recent implementation for Xbox users, both companies working in tandem with the Online Safety Act.
The restrictions aim to ensure that younger players don't access potentially inappropriate content, but older players might find themselves locked out unless they comply by the deadline. Sony advises early verification to avoid any disruption.
While the move is seen as a step towards safer online gaming environments, it also signals an increasing trend of digital identity verification. As more parts of the Online Safety Act come into force this year, one can only wonder what other features might require verification in the future.
