Saros: Returnal's Revenge with a Twist

Housemarque proves a worthy sequel developer, but can they keep the player from going mad?

Saros is a welcome evolution of Returnal's brutal gameplay, promising a smarter, yet still unforgiving experience. With Housemarque now a Sony first-party studio, it's clear that their unique blend of challenging action and retro-style gunplay continues to impress on the PS5.

The game's roguelike mechanics, like permanent progression and instant revives, offer a fresh take on Returnal's formula. The addition of a teleport system allows for more efficient exploration, making Saros an engaging challenge without repeating tedious sections.

While the alt-fire input can be frustratingly subtle, the game's use of Unreal Engine 5 ensures that every shot and explosion feels impactful. Arjun Devraj's journey across Carcosa is as visually stunning as it is perilous, mirroring the moon's narrative significance from Returnal.

Housemarque strikes a balance between challenge and accomplishment, pushing players to their limit before rewarding them with new abilities and powerful weapons. It's a testament to their skill that Saros feels like a must-play for any fan of intense, bullet-hell action games.
