At Sony's recent earnings presentation, it was revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) is being leveraged not as a replacement for human creativity but as a powerful assistant in the making of PlayStation games. For instance, the animation tools at Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio have been augmented with AI to speed up complex tasks like facial animation.
One such tool, Mockingbird, can now complete what once took hours in mere seconds, all while ensuring that human performers remain central to the creative process. Sony stresses that these technological advancements are meant to optimise data processing rather than undermine human talent.
In a broader context, Sony has partnered with Bandai Namco to explore how AI and other technologies can aid in video production, aiming for significant gains in speed and productivity. However, they also acknowledge the challenges of AI's consistency and control, particularly in generative models.
Meanwhile, PS5 sales have taken a dip, down 46% year over year, following substantial price hikes. This suggests that while players might be warming to AI-assisted game creation, their wallets are not opening quite as wide.
