Steam Controller’s Charger Almost Set User's Watch Ablaze

A metallic watch strap and Valve’s magnetic puck nearly sparked a domestic disaster.

When the Steam Controller's magnetic charging puck 'clicks' into place, it promises a hassle-free gaming experience. However, for one Reddit user, this convenience almost turned toxic.

User Toikka reported an alarming incident where their metallic watch strap accidentally contacted the charging puck, triggering a short circuit that caused the metal portion to sizzle ominously. The precise angle at which the strap fell meant that a fire was merely hours away from starting in what could have been a household accident of epic proportions.

Valve's own manual warns of such potential dangers, stating that both the puck and controller contain 'magnetic parts' that may attract metallic items. They advise users to ensure there are no nearby magnetic objects to prevent sparks and reduce the risk of property damage or injury. The manual also notes a secondary concern: the magnets could interfere with medical devices, credit cards, and magnetic data storage.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly innocuous gadgets can pose significant risks if not used carefully. For Valve, it’s another opportunity to refine their product's safety features; for users, it's a lesson in mindful gadget use.
