Bubsy 4D is surprisingly likeable but far from pawsome. This platformer, while entertaining with its self-aware humour and clever mechanics, struggles with repetitive levels and frustrating controls.
Developer Fabraz injects charm into the bobcat’s journey through a mix of rolling and collecting, albeit within a visually sparse environment that feels more industrial than whimsical. Bubsy’s animation is endearing, but his movements are often imprecise, making for a sometimes clunky gameplay experience.
The game’s narrative, involving an intergalactic crisis courtesy of robotic sheep, is both silly and somewhat forgettable. While the collectables offer some variety in the form of cosmetics and upgrades, they don’t fully redeem the repetitive nature of the levels.
Ultimately, Bubsy 4D provides a fun, if not brilliant, take on the platformer genre. It’s an indie effort that scratches the surface but doesn’t quite hit the mark, much like its feline star might roll off a sofa and avoid another adventure.
