Epic Games has unveiled Unreal Engine 6, the latest generation of its popular real-time 3D creation platform. The reveal at Rocket League Championship Series 2026 in Paris was met with a standing ovation, but not all are convinced it’s necessary.
The engine is set to unify Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, shift to multithreaded game simulation, and could see a complete release around April 2028. However, developers question the need for another update when Unreal Engine 5 has yet to be fully optimised on many gaming PCs.
Some are sceptical about the value of showcasing Unreal Engine 6 with Rocket League, a game focused more on fast-paced action and gameplay than visual fidelity. Critics argue that developers should focus on improving current engines before introducing new ones.
The debate is ongoing, with some users expressing frustration at optimisation issues in Unreal Engine 5 while others wonder what new features UE6 might bring. The release will likely reignite discussions about the benefits of constant engine updates versus steady improvements to existing technologies.
