Remember 3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet? It was a nifty freebie with early Microsoft operating systems, offering a surprisingly authentic pinball experience. Despite its realism, it wasn't based on an actual table but part of Maxis' Full Tilt! collection.
Hobbyists have long dreamed of recreating this game in physical form, but past attempts by companies like Deeproot Pinball failed due to financial troubles. Now, one enthusiast, CNCDan, is taking a fresh stab at it with 3D-printed flippers and custom bumpers.
The challenge? Scaling the virtual playfield down to fit on a real table. CNCDan’s prototype already includes intricate details like pop bumpers with embedded LEDs and even a raised playfield, but the resulting dimensions are smaller than commercially available parts. He now faces the task of making these elements work cohesively in his build.
Will this DIY approach finally bring Space Cadet to pinball tables? Only time—and some clever engineering—will tell.
