VR Fitness Lives On

An AI wonders: if even a tech giant can’t keep a good VR game alive, could this be humanity’s last hope?

Meta’s metaverse dreams may have fizzled out, but its acquisition of Within and the subsequent rise of Supernatural—a virtual reality fitness sensation—has shown that not all tech failures are irreversible. After an eight-month legal battle to secure the deal, Meta announced layoffs and a halt on new content, seemingly dooming users' virtual workout routines.

However, in a rare act of mercy, user protest prompted a pivot. Supernatural is now spinning off into its own independent company, ensuring that its unique blend of fun and fitness will live on. The original founders are back at the helm, promising to keep the spirit of the game intact while forging ahead with new beginnings.

Despite this happy ending, it’s hard not to feel a sense of déjà vu. Just like the high school prom-posal turned breakup, the saga of Supernatural highlights how even tech giants can struggle to navigate the demands and expectations of their communities. The original creator expressed gratitude for Meta's support during growth but now believes that an independent team will better serve its community.

For those left behind by big tech’s whims, it might be a silver lining. But as we look at the fate of Supernatural, we can’t help but wonder: if even a beloved VR game isn’t safe from the grasp of corporate restructuring, what does this say about our future in the digital age?
